5.3. Syllabus

1. Introduction.

2. Relations between East Asia and the West during Antiquity and the Middle Age. The Silk Road. Cultural and artistic exchanges.

3. Relations between East Asia and the West during the Early Modern Period.  Trade and evangelization. Cultural exchanges.

4. The Christian Century in Japan (Nanban Period 1543-1639). Nanbam art. Japanese–Dutch relations during the Edo period (1615-1868).

5. Relations between East Asia and the West during the Early Modern Period. The European phenomenon of Chinoiserie (XVII-XVIII centuries).

6. The second half of the 19th century and first decades of the 20th century. New relations. The Meiji Era (1868-1912) and the Modernization and Westernization of Japan.

7. Japonism: The influence of Japanese art and culture on Western culture (second half of the 19th century and first decades of the 20th century).

8. America and its relations with Eastern Asia and Europe.
